Treviso, Italy: where it is and what to see

Treviso is the capital of its namesake province in Veneto, just over 30 km north of Venice. Between the plain and the Prosecco hills, it has a compact, lived-in historic centre that is easy to explore on foot.

What the city is like

Sixteenth-century Venetian walls surround a centre crossed by the Sile and Cagnan rivers. Canals, porticoes and frescoed façades explain its nicknames: little Venice and urbs picta, the painted city.

What to see

  • Piazza dei Signori and Palazzo dei Trecento.
  • Isola della Pescheria and the Buranelli canal.
  • The cathedral, Santa Caterina Museum, city walls and historic gates.

When to go

Spring and autumn are best for walking. Summers are hot and winters cold and damp. From late autumn through winter, radicchio rosso di Treviso tardivo is at its seasonal best.
